Before They Labeled Me, God Called Me: Breaking Free From the Labels People Gave You

Rejected. Broken. Not enough. Too much. Different. A mistake. Forgotten. Outsider. Unworthy. Disqualified. Unloved. Just a number.

Some of those labels were shouted at you. Some were whispered. Some were never said out loud at all, just implied by who got picked, who got called back, who got remembered. And if you're honest, a few of them you stuck on yourself.

Labels stick because they show up early and they repeat often. But here's what the people who handed them to you didn't know: they were late. Before anybody labeled you, God had already called you.

Labels Are Loud, but They Are Late

Isaiah 43:1 is one of the most personal verses in the Bible: “But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.”

Look at what comes right before it. The end of Isaiah 42 describes Israel at its worst: robbed, plundered, trapped, refusing to walk in God's ways. If anyone had earned a label, it was them. And then God says, “But now.” He doesn't wait for them to clean up first. He speaks their name and claims them in the middle of their mess.

The labels people give you describe a moment. The name God gives you describes a covenant. One of those is temporary.

God Has a Habit of Renaming People

All through Scripture, God speaks identity over people before they look like it:

  • Gideon was hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat where the enemy couldn't see him, when the angel greeted him as a “mighty man of valour” (Judges 6:12). Not “scared farmer.” Mighty man.
  • Jacob carried a name tied to grasping and scheming until God renamed him Israel (Genesis 32:28).
  • Simon was called Peter, “the rock” (Matthew 16:18), before he ever denied Jesus three times, and Jesus never took the name back.

God isn't describing who you were on your worst day. He's declaring who you are in Him.

How to Peel Off a Label

1. Name it. You can't cross out what you won't look at. Write down the label that still talks the loudest.

2. Trace it. Who handed it to you? A parent, a teacher, an ex, a church hurt, your own inner critic? Knowing where a label came from reminds you it came from a person, not from God.

3. Answer it with what God said.

  • Rejected? You are accepted in the Beloved (Ephesians 1:6).
  • Not enough? His grace is sufficient, and His strength is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9).
  • Disqualified? The Father has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the saints (Colossians 1:12).
  • Forgotten? He has engraved you on the palms of His hands (Isaiah 49:16).
  • A mistake? You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
  • Just a number? Even the hairs of your head are numbered (Luke 12:7).

4. Repeat it until it's louder. Labels got loud through repetition. Truth gets louder the same way. Say it in the car, write it on the mirror, pray it on the hard mornings.

Wear the Reminder

Our Before They Labeled Me, God Called Me HIS sweatshirt puts this whole testimony on one piece: every label the world tried to stick on you, crossed out, and one word in its place. HIS.

It's part of our Branded By God: I Know Whose I Am collection, made for believers whose identity is already settled.
