You Are Not Your Mistakes
We often let our worst moments define us: the divorce, the addiction, the arrest, the abortion, the affair, the angry words, the years we wasted. Others may label us by them too. But God has a way of naming people by grace, not by their past.
Rahab: from her past to the family of Jesus
Rahab was known in Jericho for her immoral life. The Bible even calls her "Rahab the harlot." But when she hid Israel's spies and trusted the God of Israel, everything changed.
Hebrews 11:31: "By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace."
She's listed in the Hall of Faith, and in the family line of Jesus Himself (Matthew 1:5). Her past was real, but it wasn't her final identity. Her faith was.
David: a man after God's heart
David committed adultery and arranged a man's death. Few failures are worse. Yet after his deep repentance (Psalm 51), God still described him this way:
Acts 13:22: "I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will."
God didn't excuse David's sin. There were real consequences. But He didn't define David by it either.
Paul: the chief of sinners
Before he followed Jesus, Paul hunted Christians and approved of their deaths. Later he wrote:
1 Timothy 1:15: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief."
Paul didn't hide his past. He used it to show how great God's grace is. And God used him to write much of the New Testament.
Your mistakes are events, not your identity
You did something. That doesn't mean you are that thing. In Christ, your identity is "child of God," "forgiven," "new creation." Those labels outrank every other one.
Micah 7:8: "When I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me."
How to stop letting your past name you
- Own it honestly, without excuses.
- Receive forgiveness fully. Don't keep paying for what Jesus paid for.
- Refuse old labels. When the thought "I'm a ___" comes, replace it with what God says.
- Let God use your story. Your testimony could be someone else's hope.
Our Living Proof Collection and Christian t-shirts are made for people whose stories show God's grace.
A prayer
Lord, I've let my mistakes define me for too long. Thank You that You named Rahab, David, and Paul by grace, and You do the same for me. Help me own my past without being owned by it. Use my story to show how big Your grace is. Amen.
