Signed by the Creator: Why You're God's Original, Not a Copy (Ephesians 2:10)

In the art world, a signature changes everything. Two paintings can look almost identical, but the one carrying the artist's real signature is the original. The other is a copy, no matter how good it looks.

Here's the problem: we live in a culture that keeps handing us templates. Look like this. Earn like that. Parent, date, dress, and post like the people who seem to have it figured out. Follow the templates long enough and you start to feel like a copy of somebody else's life.

But you weren't made from a template. You were made by hand, and the Creator signed His work.

His Workmanship

Ephesians 2:10 says: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

The Greek word for “workmanship” is poiēma. It's where we get our English word “poem.” You're not mass-produced. You're a crafted work, intentional in every line.

And notice the last part: the good works were prepared beforehand. God didn't make you and then scramble to figure out what to do with you. The purpose was ready before you arrived.

Created. Called. Claimed.

Created. God made humanity in His own image (Genesis 1:27). Your design wasn't an accident or an afterthought; it reflects your Maker.

Called. God “hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace” (2 Timothy 1:9). Your calling isn't based on your résumé. It's based on His purpose.

Claimed. “Ye are bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:20). An original is valued by what someone is willing to pay for it, and Heaven paid the highest price there is.

Counterfeits Don't Come With the Creator's Signature

Comparison is exhausting because it asks you to measure an original against copies. When you try to become a version of someone else, you trade the one thing that makes you valuable, His signature on your life, for an imitation.

Some ways the counterfeit shows up:

  • Changing your personality depending on the room.
  • Hiding the parts of your story God wants to use.
  • Chasing a calling that looks impressive instead of the one He prepared.
  • Believing you'd be more useful to God if you were more like someone else.

Living Like an Original

Thank God for your design. Psalm 139:14 isn't just a nice verse; it's a prayer. Pray it about the specific things you've been embarrassed by.

Ask what's already prepared. Instead of “What should I become?” ask, “Lord, what good works have You already set in front of me today?”

Protect the signature. Guard your heart from the voices that keep pushing you toward a template. You can learn from others without becoming a copy of them.

Wear the Reminder

Our Created. Called. Claimed. Signed by the Creator sweatshirt carries the line that started this whole article: Counterfeits don't come with the Creator's signature. It's anchored in Ephesians 2:10 and part of our Branded By God: I Know Whose I Am collection.
