Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: Psalm 139 for Your Self-Worth
Psalm 139:13–16: "For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written."
Few verses have encouraged more people struggling with self-worth than "I am fearfully and wonderfully made." But it's easy to say the words and still look in the mirror with disappointment. Let's look at what this passage really means.
"Fearfully" means with awe
"Fearfully" here doesn't mean God was afraid. It carries the sense of reverence and awe. You were made in a way that should cause wonder. And "wonderfully" suggests being set apart, distinct, marvelous. God didn't mass-produce you. He crafted you with intention.
God was personally involved
Look at the verbs: possessed, covered, made, wrought, saw, wrote. God wasn't distant during your formation. "Curiously wrought" can suggest something skillfully woven or embroidered. You are God's handiwork, made with care, detail by detail.
Made in His image
Genesis 1:27: "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."
Your worth isn't based on your appearance, abilities, achievements, or what others think. It's rooted in the fact that you bear God's image. That's true on your best day and your worst.
When you struggle with your body
Many people quote Psalm 139 while secretly criticizing everything about how they look. The world constantly tells us we need to change, shrink, tighten, or fix ourselves. God says you were made marvelously. Caring for your body is good stewardship, but your value was never meant to depend on it.
When you feel different
Some people feel "different" because of a disability, neurodivergence, a medical condition, or simply not fitting in. Psalm 139 says God saw your substance before anyone else did, and wrote your days in His book. Different isn't a mistake. You were made on purpose.
Silencing comparison
Comparison says you're only valuable if you measure up to someone else. Psalm 139 says your value comes from your Maker. You can't be a better version of someone else, and you don't need to be. God made one of you.
Practicing Psalm 139
- Read it aloud daily for a week, slowly.
- Thank God for one specific thing about how He made you each day.
- Notice critical self-talk and answer it with verse 14.
- Speak it over your children, especially when they compare themselves to others.

A prayer
Lord, You made me with care and wonder. Forgive me for the times I've criticized what You crafted. Help me see myself through Your eyes. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I want my soul to know it right well. Amen.
