The Names of God in the Bible and What They Mean

In the Bible, names aren't just labels. They reveal character. When God revealed a new name for Himself, it was usually in a moment when His people desperately needed to know that part of who He is. Learning the names of God is like being handed a key for every season of life.

Here are some of the most meaningful names of God in Scripture, what each one means, and how to pray it.

Elohim: The Creator

Genesis 1:1: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
The very first name for God in the Bible. Elohim is the mighty Creator who spoke everything into being.
Pray it when: you need to remember that nothing is too big for the One who made it all.

El Shaddai: God Almighty

Genesis 17:1: "I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect."
God spoke this name to Abraham when he was 99 years old and still waiting on a promised son. El Shaddai is all-sufficient: more than enough when you have nothing left.
Pray it when: a promise seems impossible.

El Elyon: The Most High God

Genesis 14:19: "Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth."
There is no one above Him: no ruler, no power, no circumstance.
Pray it when: people or problems feel bigger than God.

El Roi: The God Who Sees Me

Genesis 16:13: "And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me."
Hagar was a mistreated servant who ran away into the desert. There, God found her, and she became the first person in Scripture to give God a name.
Pray it when: you feel invisible or forgotten.

Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide

Genesis 22:14: "And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh."
On the mountain where Abraham was tested, God provided a ram in the place of Isaac. He sees ahead and provides what's needed.
Pray it when: money, resources, or answers are running out.

Jehovah Rapha: The Lord Who Heals

Exodus 15:26: "For I am the LORD that healeth thee."
Spoken after God made bitter water sweet for thirsty Israel. He heals bodies, hearts, and broken places. Our Jehovah Rapha, My Healer Collection is built around this name.
Pray it when: you or someone you love needs healing.

Jehovah Nissi: The Lord Is My Banner

Exodus 17:15: "And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi."
After Israel's victory over Amalek, Moses named the altar for the God who fights for His people. A banner marks whose side you're on.
Pray it when: you're in a battle.

Jehovah Shalom: The Lord Is Peace

Judges 6:24: "Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah-shalom."
Gideon was terrified and hiding when God called him. God answered his fear with peace.
Pray it when: anxiety is loud.

Jehovah Raah: The Lord My Shepherd

Psalm 23:1: "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want."
He leads, feeds, protects, and restores.
Pray it when: you don't know which way to go.

Jehovah Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness

Jeremiah 23:6: "And this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS."
We can't make ourselves right with God. He is our righteousness, fulfilled in Jesus.
Pray it when: guilt or shame tells you you're not good enough.

Jehovah Shammah: The Lord Is There

Ezekiel 48:35: "And the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there."
The final words of Ezekiel. Wherever God's people are, He is present.
Pray it when: you feel alone.

I AM

Exodus 3:14: "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM."
God is eternal, unchanging, and self-existent. Jesus later used this name of Himself, which is why the crowds were stunned.
Pray it when: everything else feels unstable.

Immanuel: God With Us

Matthew 1:23: "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."
The name that changed everything: God didn't stay distant. He came close.
Pray it when: you need to know He understands.

How to use God's names in prayer

Pray the name that fits your need. Instead of only "Lord, help," try "Jehovah Jireh, You are my provider. I trust You with this bill."

Study one name a week. Read the full story where it appears. You'll see God's character in action.

Keep the names in front of you. Our Jehovah Names Collection and Christian wooden signs put these names on everyday reminders for your home and wardrobe.

A prayer using the names of God

Elohim, You made me. El Roi, You see me. Jehovah Jireh, You provide for me. Jehovah Rapha, You heal me. Jehovah Shalom, You are my peace. Immanuel, You are with me right now. Help me know You by every name, and trust You in every season. Amen.
