Faith and Patriotism: Loving Your Country as a Christian

Fireworks, cookouts, parades, and flags: the Fourth of July is a celebration of freedom. For Christians, it's also a good moment to ask how our love for our country fits with our faith.

Gratitude is biblical

It's right to thank God for the freedoms and blessings we enjoy, including the freedom to worship openly. Many believers around the world don't have that freedom. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above" (James 1:17).

Seek the good of where you live

When God's people were exiled in Babylon, He told them:

Jeremiah 29:7: "And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace."

Christians are called to care about the flourishing of their communities and nation: praying, serving, and working for the good of all.

Our first citizenship

Philippians 3:20: "For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ."

"Conversation" here means citizenship. Believers are citizens of heaven first. We can love our country deeply while remembering that our ultimate loyalty belongs to Christ and His kingdom, which includes believers of every nation.

Keeping patriotism healthy

  • Love your country without making it an idol.
  • Pray for leaders of every party (1 Timothy 2:1–2).
  • Honor those who serve and sacrifice.
  • Love neighbors across divides, including those who see things differently.
  • Stay humble. Every nation needs God's grace.

Ways to celebrate with faith

  • Pray for your nation before the cookout.
  • Thank a veteran or first responder.
  • Invite a neighbor to your celebration.
  • Read Psalm 33:12 together: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD."

Celebrate faith and freedom with our Christian patriotic tees and patriotic hats.
