The God of the Ordinary: Finding God in the Small, Simple, Everyday Moments
The God of the Ordinary: Where Heaven Meets Your Everyday Life
We love the God of miracles. The God who parts seas, heals bodies, opens doors, and shifts atmospheres. But most of our lives aren’t lived on mountaintops or in Red Sea moments. Most of our lives are lived in the ordinary—the routines, the commutes, the laundry, the conversations, the quiet mornings, the long afternoons, the everyday responsibilities that don’t feel spiritual at all.
And yet… God is just as present in the ordinary as He is in the extraordinary.
Sometimes even more.
1. God Has Always Worked Through the Ordinary
Scripture is full of moments where God chose the simple, the small, and the overlooked to reveal His glory.
-
Moses was tending sheep when God called him (Exodus 3).
-
David was delivering lunch when he met Goliath (1 Samuel 17).
-
Ruth was gleaning in a field when her destiny shifted (Ruth 2).
-
Mary was living a quiet, normal life when the angel appeared (Luke 1).
-
The disciples were fishing when Jesus said, “Follow Me” (Matthew 4).
None of these people were in a temple. None were fasting on a mountain. None were in a moment of deep spiritual intensity.
They were simply living life.
And God stepped into the ordinary and made it holy.
2. The Ordinary Is Where God Forms You
We often think spiritual growth happens in big moments—revivals, breakthroughs, answered prayers. But the truth is: God shapes your character in the everyday.
-
In the patience you practice with your children
-
In the discipline of showing up to work
-
In the humility of serving others
-
In the consistency of prayer when nothing dramatic is happening
-
In the quiet choices no one sees
The ordinary is where God builds endurance, integrity, compassion, and faithfulness.
It’s where He prepares you for the extraordinary.
Jesus Himself spent 30 years in ordinary life before 3 years of ministry. If the Savior embraced the ordinary, we shouldn’t despise it.
3. Why We Miss God in the Ordinary
We miss Him because we expect Him to show up with fireworks. We expect goosebumps, signs, wonders, and dramatic confirmations.
But God often whispers. He often nudges. He often moves subtly.
He is the God of:
-
the still small voice (1 Kings 19:12)
-
the daily bread (Matthew 6:11)
-
the quiet waters (Psalm 23:2)
-
the unnoticed growth (Mark 4:27)
If you’re always looking for the spectacular, you’ll overlook the supernatural happening right in front of you.
4. How to Recognize God in the Ordinary
A. Slow Down Enough to Notice
God is not in a hurry. We often are.
But His presence is easiest to sense when we pause.
B. Invite Him Into Your Routine
Not just your prayer time—your whole day.
“Lord, be with me while I work.” “Speak to me while I drive.” “Guide me while I parent.” “Sit with me while I rest.”
C. Look for His Fingerprints
They’re everywhere:
-
in the kindness of a stranger
-
in the laughter of your child
-
in the strength you didn’t know you had
-
in the peace that makes no sense
-
in the idea that came out of nowhere
-
in the protection you didn’t see
D. Practice Gratitude
Gratitude opens your eyes to God’s activity.
The more you thank Him, the more you see Him.
5. The Ordinary Is Not a Delay — It’s a Divine Setup
Sometimes we think ordinary seasons mean God is silent or inactive. But often, the ordinary is where He is doing His deepest work.
Before David held a crown, he held a harp. Before Peter preached to thousands, he cast nets. Before Esther saved a nation, she lived quietly in a palace. Before Jesus performed miracles, He lived a simple life in Nazareth.
The ordinary is not a punishment. It’s preparation.
God is forming you, strengthening you, and positioning you—even when life feels routine.
Final Encouragement
You don’t have to wait for a miracle to experience God. You don’t have to wait for a breakthrough to feel close to Him. You don’t have to wait for a dramatic moment to know He’s working.
He is the God of the ordinary. The God who sits with you in silence. The God who walks with you through routine. The God who breathes purpose into your everyday life.
And if you look closely, you’ll see that the ordinary moments were never ordinary at all. They were sacred. They were intentional. They were God—right there with you.
Closing Prayer
Father, Thank You for being the God who meets us not only in the miraculous, but in the simple, quiet, everyday moments of our lives. Open our eyes to recognize Your presence in the places we often overlook. Teach us to slow down, to breathe, and to see Your fingerprints woven into our routines, our responsibilities, and our relationships. Lord, help us embrace the ordinary as holy ground. Remind us that nothing is too small for You to use, and no moment is too simple for You to fill with purpose. Just as You called Moses from a field, David from a pasture, and the disciples from their boats, call us from our daily places into deeper awareness of You. Give us hearts that notice, ears that listen, and spirits that respond. Let gratitude rise in us for the quiet blessings, the hidden growth, and the gentle ways You shape us when life feels uneventful. May we never mistake silence for absence. May we never confuse routine with insignificance. You are here—moving, guiding, forming, and loving us in every moment. We welcome You into our ordinary, Lord. Make it sacred. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
