Communication in Christian Marriage: 7 Biblical Principles

Most marriage problems are, at their root, communication problems. Thankfully, the Bible has a lot to say about how we use our words. Here are seven principles that can transform the way you and your spouse talk to each other.

1. Build up, don't tear down

Ephesians 4:29: "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers."

Before you speak, ask: Will this build my spouse up?

2. Listen before you answer

Proverbs 18:13: "He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him."

Put the phone down. Make eye contact. Let them finish.

3. Speak the truth in love

Ephesians 4:15 calls us to speak "the truth in love." Truth without love wounds. Love without truth avoids. Marriage needs both.

4. Choose gentle words

Proverbs 16:24: "Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones."

Tone matters as much as content. The same sentence can heal or harm depending on how it's said.

5. Don't let issues pile up

Ephesians 4:26 warns against letting the sun go down on your anger. Small, unspoken frustrations grow into big resentments.

6. Ask good questions

"How was your day?" gets "fine." Try "What was the best part of your day?" or "What's weighing on you right now?"

7. Make room for encouragement every day

Hebrews 3:13 tells us to "exhort one another daily." Say thank you. Notice the effort. Speak your love out loud, often.

Try this tonight

Take 15 minutes with no screens. Each of you shares one high, one low, and one way the other can pray for you. Then pray for each other. Small daily conversations protect a marriage better than occasional big ones.

Need a light-hearted conversation starter? Our funny Christian gifts often get couples laughing together, and laughter opens the door to real talk.

A prayer for our words

Lord, set a guard over our mouths. Help us listen well, speak gently, and build each other up. Let our words minister grace in our home. Amen.
