How to Handle Conflict in Marriage Biblically
Every marriage has conflict. Two sinners living under one roof will disagree. The question isn't whether you'll argue, but how. Scripture gives a clear path for handling conflict in a way that draws you closer instead of pulling you apart.
What the Bible says about anger
Ephesians 4:26: "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath."
James 1:19: "Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."
Proverbs 15:1: "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger."
Anger itself isn't always sin. What we do with it is what matters.
6 steps to handle conflict biblically
1. Check your own heart first. Jesus said to remove the beam from your own eye first (Matthew 7:5). Ask, "What's my part in this?"
2. Pick the right time. Hungry, exhausted, or in front of the kids is the wrong time. Agree to talk once things calm down, but don't let it drag on for days.
3. Listen to understand. Repeat back what you hear: "So you felt ignored when I..." You'll be surprised how much tension that releases.
4. Attack the problem, not the person. Say "I felt hurt when..." instead of "You always..."
5. Speak softly. A gentle tone can defuse what loud words would ignite.
6. Confess, forgive, and pray. End by owning your part, extending forgiveness, and praying together.
Words to retire
- "You always" and "You never"
- Bringing up past offenses that were already forgiven
- Threats of leaving or divorce
- Name-calling or mocking
Conflict is not abuse
Healthy conflict is two people working toward peace. Abuse is one person using fear, threats, or harm to control the other. If you're afraid of your spouse, please reach out to a pastor, counselor, or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
A prayer after an argument
Lord, we've hurt each other. Soften our hearts. Help us listen more than we speak and seek peace more than victory. Forgive us as we forgive each other, and make us one again. Amen.
