Renewing Your Wedding Vows: A Christian Guide

A vow renewal is a beautiful way to celebrate God's faithfulness in your marriage. Whether it's a milestone anniversary, a fresh start after a hard season, or simply a chance to say "I'd choose you again," here's how to plan a meaningful, Christ-centered renewal.

Why renew your vows?

  • To celebrate a milestone like 10, 25, or 50 years.
  • To mark restoration after a difficult season.
  • To include children who weren't there the first time.
  • To recommit to Christ as the center of your marriage, especially if you married before coming to faith.

A biblical picture

Throughout Scripture, God's people renewed their covenant with Him (Joshua 24, Nehemiah 9–10). Renewing your vows reflects that same rhythm: remembering, recommitting, and rejoicing.

Lamentations 3:22–23: "His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness."

Planning the ceremony

Keep it simple or go big. A private moment with your pastor, a backyard gathering, or a full celebration all count.

Ask a pastor or mentor to officiate. Anyone meaningful to your marriage can lead it.

Choose Scripture. See our wedding Bible verses for ideas.

Share testimony. Tell your guests how God carried you.

Writing new vows

Reflect on what you've learned. Include:

  • A memory from your years together
  • A hard season God brought you through
  • What you love about your spouse now
  • Your promise for the years ahead

Meaningful touches

  • A cord of three strands ceremony (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
  • Children reading a verse or praying
  • Communion together
  • A keepsake, like our Ecclesiastes 4:12 couple mugs

A prayer for vow renewal

Lord, You have been faithful to us. As we renew our promises, we recommit ourselves to You and to each other. Write the next chapter of our story. Amen.
