When Anxiety Won’t Let You Rest: A Devotional on God’s Peace
There are nights when you’re exhausted but your mind refuses to cooperate. You lie in bed replaying conversations, worrying about bills, thinking about your kids, or wondering if you said the wrong thing at work. You check the clock — 1:12 AM… then 2:47 AM… and the more you try to sleep, the more awake you feel.
Anxiety has a way of making your pillow feel like a battlefield.
But God speaks a different word over your night.
“I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8
David didn’t write this from a place of comfort. He wrote it while surrounded by pressure, uncertainty, and enemies. Yet he still declared that God alone made him safe enough to rest.
1. God’s Peace Meets You in the Middle of Real Life
Think about the moments anxiety hits hardest:
-
When you’re driving home replaying a mistake
-
When your child is struggling and you feel helpless
-
When your phone buzzes with unexpected news
-
When you’re trying to sleep but your mind is sprinting
God doesn’t wait for you to calm down first. He steps into the swirl with you.
2. You Don’t Have to Hold Everything Together
Anxiety often comes from feeling responsible for outcomes you can’t control:
-
“What if this doesn’t work out?”
-
“What if I fail?”
-
“What if something goes wrong?”
But God never asked you to be your own protector. He simply asks you to rest in His.
3. Peace Is a Practice, Not a Personality Trait
You don’t have to be naturally calm to experience God’s peace. You just have to practice turning your thoughts toward Him.
Try this tonight: Place your hand on your chest and whisper, “God, I give You what I can’t control.”
Prayer:
Lord, when my thoughts race and my heart feels heavy, remind me that You are near. Quiet my mind with Your peace and help me rest in Your protection. Amen.
Reflection Question:
What anxious thought do you need to surrender to God tonight?
