A Spiritual Self-Care Plan for Healthcare Workers

Healthcare workers spend all day caring for others' bodies. But who's caring for your soul? As a new year approaches, it's a great time to build a simple, realistic plan for spiritual self-care that fits a healthcare schedule.

Why Spiritual Self-Care Matters

Jesus asked, "What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" (Matthew 16:26). You can't pour from an empty cup, and you can't sustain a life of caring for others without being cared for by God. Spiritual self-care isn't selfish. It's how you stay able to serve.

Build a Plan That Fits Your Shifts

Forget the perfect quiet time at 5 a.m. Healthcare schedules rotate. Your plan should flex with them.

1. Daily: A Short, Steady Rhythm

  • Before shift: A one-minute prayer in your car or locker room.
  • During shift: One verse on a card, read during your break.
  • After shift: A "handoff prayer" giving your patients back to God before you drive home.

2. Weekly: Real Rest and Worship

  • Protect one Sabbath day off, even if it's a Wednesday.
  • Worship with others, in person or online.
  • Do something that brings you joy and has nothing to do with work.

3. Monthly: Check-In and Connection

  • Meet with a mentor, friend, or small group to talk honestly about how you're doing.
  • Review: What's draining me? What's filling me?

4. As Needed: Get Support

  • Debrief after hard cases with a chaplain or coworker.
  • If stress, sadness, or anxiety are hanging on, talk to a licensed counselor or your Employee Assistance Program.

Choose a Verse for the Year

Pick one verse to carry all year. Some favorites among healthcare workers: Isaiah 40:31, Psalm 46:1, Lamentations 3:22-23, and 2 Corinthians 12:9. Write it everywhere: your locker, your phone, your badge reel.

A Prayer for the New Year

Lord, as I care for others this year, teach me to let You care for me. Give me rhythms of rest, worship, and honest connection. Keep my soul healthy so my service can last. Amen.

Tools for Your Plan

A Christian journal is a perfect place to write prayers, verses, and gratitude lists. And a faith mug makes your morning prayer time a little cozier.
