The Incarnation and Healthcare: The God Who Draws Near to Suffering
At Christmas we celebrate the Incarnation: the eternal Son of God taking on human flesh. "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us" (John 1:14). For people who work in healthcare, there's something especially meaningful about this truth. God didn't just send help from a distance. He came close enough to touch.
God Took On a Body
Jesus was born as a fragile newborn who needed to be fed, kept warm, and cared for. He grew tired (John 4:6), hungry (Matthew 4:2), and thirsty (John 19:28). He felt pain. The God of the universe chose to experience the same human body you care for every day. Every body you treat is a body God honored by taking one on Himself.
He Moved Toward Suffering
Hebrews 4:15 says we have a High Priest who can be "touched with the feeling of our infirmities." Jesus didn't avoid suffering. He walked straight into it, all the way to the cross. Isaiah 53:4 says, "Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows."
Healthcare is, in many ways, the work of moving toward suffering when everyone else would rather look away. In that, you reflect the heart of Christmas.
Presence Is a Gift
The name Emmanuel means "God with us." Before Jesus healed anyone, He simply came and was with us. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can offer a patient isn't a treatment. It's presence: sitting down, making eye contact, listening, staying a moment longer.
Reflection Questions for Christmas Week
- How does it change my work to know that God Himself had a human body?
- Where am I tempted to keep my distance from someone's suffering?
- How can I offer the gift of presence to a patient or coworker this week?
A Christmas Prayer
Jesus, Word made flesh, thank You for coming close. Thank You for choosing a body like ours and carrying our sorrows. Help me move toward suffering with Your compassion, and let my presence remind people that You are with them. Amen.
