Strong Men Struggle Too: Christian Men and Mental Health

By the Claimed by God Designs Team

A lot of Christian men were taught to be the rock: provide, protect, lead and never let them see you sweat. So when anxiety, depression or burnout shows up, many men keep it to themselves. They work harder, get quieter, get angrier or numb out.

Here's the truth: strong men struggle too. Asking for help is part of real strength.

The Bible's Strongest Men Hurt Out Loud

  • David, a warrior and king, wrote, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me?” (Psalm 42:11).
  • Elijah, fresh off a mighty victory, sat under a tree and asked God to let him die (1 Kings 19:4).
  • Jesus told His closest friends, “My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me” (Matthew 26:38). He asked for company in His darkest hour.

None of these men were weak. They were honest.

Depression Can Look Different in Men

Men don't always describe feeling sad. Depression and anxiety in men can show up as:

  • Irritability, anger or a short fuse
  • Working all the time or checking out completely
  • Drinking more or other risky behavior
  • Headaches, stomach problems or trouble sleeping
  • Withdrawing from family, friends and church

Why This Matters

In the U.S., men die by suicide at nearly four times the rate of women. Many never told anyone they were struggling. Silence isn't strength. It's dangerous.

What Strength Actually Looks Like

  • Telling one trusted man the truth. “Bear ye one another's burdens” (Galatians 6:2) applies to you too.
  • Seeing your doctor. Many men go years without a checkup. Mention your mood, not just your blood pressure.
  • Talking to a counselor. Plenty of counselors work specifically with men and with Christians.
  • Leading your family by example. When your kids see you get help, they learn that faith and wisdom go together.

God told Paul, “My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). You don't have to fake strength. You can borrow His.

If you're struggling right now: you don't have to carry this alone. In the U.S., call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) any time, day or night. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. Outside the U.S., contact your local emergency number.
