Why Christians Shouldn't Fear the Devil
Today the church around the world celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, and with it, the defeat of the devil. If you've ever felt afraid of spiritual attack, of the enemy, or of evil, Easter is the perfect day to remember who already won.
Take him seriously, but don't fear him
The Bible is clear that the devil is real:
1 Peter 5:8–9: "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith."
Christians can err in two directions: ignoring spiritual warfare completely, or becoming so focused on the devil that they live in constant fear. Scripture calls us to neither. Be alert, but don't be afraid.
Greater is He
1 John 4:4: "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."
The devil is not God's equal opposite. He's a created being, already defeated. The Spirit who lives in every believer is infinitely greater.
The cross and the empty tomb
Colossians 2:15: "And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it."
Hebrews 2:14–15: "…that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage."
At the cross, Jesus disarmed the powers of darkness. At the empty tomb, He proved death couldn't hold Him. The enemy's greatest weapon, death itself, has lost its sting.
Resist, and he flees
James 4:7: "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Notice the order: submit to God first. Then resist. And the promise isn't that you'll barely survive. He'll flee.
Living without fear
- Stay close to Jesus. Your safety is in Him, not in rituals or formulas.
- Know the truth. The devil's main weapon is lies. Scripture is your defense.
- Don't give him a foothold. Ephesians 4:27 warns against giving "place to the devil" through unconfessed sin or bitterness.
- Focus on God, not the enemy. Spend more time worshipping Jesus than thinking about Satan.
- Remember the ending. Revelation tells us how the story ends. Jesus wins.
That joyful confidence is the heart of our Not Today Satan Collection. Wear the reminder in a cozy Christian hoodie.
An Easter prayer of victory
Jesus, You are risen, and the enemy is defeated. Thank You that greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world. Help me stay alert without living in fear. I submit to You, I resist the devil, and I trust that he must flee. He is risen indeed! Amen.
