Bible Verses About Identity: Who God Says You Are
Everyone carries labels. Some were given to you by others: "too much," "not enough," "failure," "difficult." Some you gave yourself. Over time, those labels can start to feel like who you are.
But if you belong to Jesus, God has already spoken over your life, and His words are truer than any label. Here are Bible verses about identity: who God says you are.
You are a new creation
- 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
- Galatians 2:20: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me."
- Colossians 3:3: "For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God."
Your past may explain parts of your story, but it doesn't define you. In Christ, the old has gone. You're not a renovated version of the old you. You're new.
You are chosen
- 1 Peter 2:9: "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light."
- Ephesians 1:4: "According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love."
God chose you before the world began, before you did anything right or wrong. You weren't picked last. You were picked on purpose.
You are God's child
- John 1:12: "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."
- 1 John 3:1: "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God."
- Galatians 4:7: "Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ."
Not a servant trying to earn your place, but a child with a seat at the table and an inheritance. That's the identity behind our Child of God Collection.
You are loved and forgiven
- Romans 8:1: "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus."
- John 15:15: "Henceforth I call you not servants… but I have called you friends."
- Romans 8:37: "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us."
You are made on purpose, for a purpose
- Ephesians 2:10: "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."
- Psalm 139:14: "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made."
- Matthew 5:14: "Ye are the light of the world."
"Workmanship" comes from a Greek word that can describe a masterpiece. You are God's handiwork, created with good works already prepared for you.
You belong to Him
- 1 Corinthians 6:19–20: "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price."
- Isaiah 43:1: "Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine."
Replace the labels
Take a minute and write down the labels you've carried. Next to each one, write the truth God says instead:
- "Failure" → "More than a conqueror" (Romans 8:37)
- "Unwanted" → "Chosen before the world began" (Ephesians 1:4)
- "Too far gone" → "A new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- "Not enough" → "God's workmanship" (Ephesians 2:10)
- "Guilty" → "No condemnation" (Romans 8:1)
Speak the truth out loud every morning for a week. Identity is reshaped by repetition. Our In Christ I Am Collection puts these declarations on everyday pieces so the truth stays in front of you.
A prayer for identity
Father, I've believed things about myself that You never said. Today I lay those labels down. Thank You that in Christ I am new, chosen, forgiven, loved, and Yours. Help me see myself the way You see me, and live from that identity instead of trying to earn it. In Jesus' name, amen.
