Bible Verses for Anxiety: 25 Scriptures to Calm Your Mind

Anxiety has a way of getting loud at the worst times: in the car before a hard conversation, in the middle of the night, or right after you open an email you've been dreading. If that's where you are, you're in good company. Scripture is full of people who felt afraid, overwhelmed, and unsure, and God met every one of them there.

Below are 25 Bible verses for anxiety, grouped by what you might be feeling right now. Read them slowly. Pick one to carry with you today. You don't have to fix everything at once; you just have to take the next breath with God.

When your mind won't stop racing

  1. Philippians 4:6–7: "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
  2. Psalm 94:19: "In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul."
  3. Isaiah 26:3: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."
  4. Psalm 139:23: "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts."
  5. 2 Timothy 1:7: "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

Notice what Philippians 4 doesn't say. It doesn't say "stop feeling anxious." It says to bring every request to God, with thanksgiving, and then promises a peace that guards your heart and mind. The guarding is His job. The bringing is yours.

When you're carrying more than you can hold

  1. 1 Peter 5:7: "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you."
  2. Psalm 55:22: "Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved."
  3. Matthew 11:28: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
  4. Proverbs 12:25: "Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad."
  5. Psalm 46:1: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

"Cast" is an active word. It pictures throwing something heavy off your shoulders and onto someone stronger. One simple practice: write down what's weighing on you, one line per worry, then pray over each line and physically cross it out as you hand it to God. A prayer journal makes this a habit instead of a one-time moment.

When you're afraid of what's coming

  1. Matthew 6:34: "Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."
  2. Isaiah 41:10: "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
  3. Joshua 1:9: "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
  4. Deuteronomy 31:8: "And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed."
  5. Psalm 56:3: "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee."

Psalm 56:3 is one of the most honest verses in the Bible. David doesn't say "I am never afraid." He says "what time I am afraid," as in when, not if. Fear showing up doesn't mean your faith failed. Trust is what you do next.

When you need to know God is near

  1. John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
  2. Psalm 23:4: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."
  3. Psalm 121:1–2: "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth."
  4. Psalm 34:4: "I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears."
  5. 2 Thessalonians 3:16: "Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means."

When you need hope for tomorrow

  1. Lamentations 3:22–23: "It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness."
  2. Matthew 6:26: "Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?"
  3. Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God."
  4. Psalm 4:8: "I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety."
  5. John 16:33: "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

How to actually use these verses

Pick one, not twenty-five. Choose the verse that hit hardest and live with it for a week. Read it in the morning, say it out loud when anxiety rises, and pray it back to God at night.

Put it where you'll see it. On your bathroom mirror, your phone lock screen, or a mug you reach for every morning. That's exactly why our Keep Calm & Trust God Collection exists: small, everyday reminders that your peace isn't up to you alone.

Breathe the verse. Slow your breathing and pair it with a short phrase: breathe in "What time I am afraid," breathe out "I will trust in thee." It sounds simple. It works.

Say it to someone. Anxiety grows in isolation. Text a verse to a friend who's struggling, or ask someone to pray with you. If you'd like a prayer right now, our Pray With Me page will write one for you based on what you're going through.

A gentle word about getting help

Turning to Scripture and seeing a doctor or counselor are not opposites. God works through prayer, through His Word, and through the people and care He places in your path. If anxiety is affecting your sleep, your work, or your relationships for weeks at a time, reaching out for professional support is wise, and it is not a lack of faith.

A prayer for anxious hearts

Lord, my mind is loud right now. I bring You every worry I'm carrying, the ones I can name and the ones I can't. Thank You that You care for me, that You go before me, and that Your mercies are new this morning. Guard my heart and my mind with Your peace, the kind I can't explain. When I'm afraid, help me trust You. In Jesus' name, amen.
