The Hard but Holy Journey of Obedience: A Testimony of Trust, Surrender, and God’s Guidance
Learning to Obey: A Testimony of Surrender, Growth, and God’s Unshakable Guidance
I used to think obedience was simple—hear God, do what He says, and everything falls into place. But the truth is, obedience is one of the hardest parts of walking with God. Not because God is unclear, but because we are often tangled in our own desires, expectations, and timelines. As believers, we don’t always talk about how challenging it is to surrender our will, our plans, and our preferences. But it’s a journey, and it’s one God patiently walks with us.
There came a point in my life where I realized that obedience wasn’t just a spiritual discipline—it was a lifeline. It was the difference between peace and confusion, clarity and chaos, growth and stagnation. God wasn’t trying to control me; He was trying to protect me. He wasn’t trying to restrict me; He was trying to guide me into the fullness of who He created me to be.
Obedience Requires an Open Heart and an Open Mind
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is this:
You cannot obey God if you only want to hear what feels good.
Obedience requires:
- A heart willing to be corrected
- A mind willing to be renewed
- A spirit willing to be led
Sometimes God speaks into our situations in ways that challenge our comfort. Sometimes He tells us to let go when we want to hold on. Sometimes He tells us to stay when we want to run. Sometimes He tells us to forgive when we want to protect our pride. And sometimes He tells us to move when fear is trying to keep us still.
But every time—every single time—His voice is for our good.
The Pain We Avoid When We Obey
Looking back, I can see how many unnecessary storms I walked into simply because I wanted my way more than God’s way. I didn’t realize that delayed obedience is still disobedience. I didn’t understand that partial obedience is still disobedience. And I didn’t see how much pain, resentment, and confusion I could have avoided if I had simply trusted His voice the first time.
Obedience doesn’t eliminate challenges, but it does eliminate the avoidable ones.
It protects us from:
- Misaligned relationships
- Wrong opportunities
- Emotional exhaustion
- Spiritual frustration
- Cycles God never intended for us
God isn’t trying to make life harder—He’s trying to make it clearer.
God Wants Us to Thrive—But His Guidance Is Essential
One of the most freeing revelations I’ve had is this:
God actually wants me to thrive.
Not just survive. Not just get by. Not just “make it.”
He wants me to flourish in:
- My relationships
- My career
- My purpose
- My calling
- My emotional and spiritual health
But thriving requires guidance. And guidance requires obedience.
God remains the guardian of our calling. He sees the traps we can’t see. He knows the motives we can’t discern. He understands the timing we can’t comprehend. And He is committed—deeply committed—to leading us into the life He designed for us.
Only God Can Be God
The more I walk with Him, the more I realize that obedience isn’t about control—it’s about trust. It’s about acknowledging that only God can be God. Only He can see the full picture. Only He can weave every detail together with purpose. Only He can turn what was meant for harm into something that works for our good.
When we obey, we step into alignment with His wisdom, His protection, and His grace.
When we obey, we stop fighting battles that were never ours.
When we obey, we stop carrying burdens we were never meant to hold.
When we obey, we experience God in ways we never could while clinging to our own understanding.
Obedience Positions Us for God’s Glory to Be Revealed
Obedience isn’t easy. It stretches us. It humbles us. It confronts us. But it also transforms us.
When we posture our hearts and minds in obedience, we create space for God to move. We allow Him to manifest His grace, His power, and His glory in ways that change us from the inside out. And that inner transformation becomes a light—one that shines so brightly that no one can dim it.
Obedience doesn’t just change our circumstances.
It changes us.
And that change becomes the testimony.
Prayer of Obedience and Surrender
Father,
Today I come before You with an open heart and a willing spirit. Teach me to obey You—not out of fear, but out of trust. Help me to silence my own desires long enough to hear Your voice clearly. Give me the courage to follow Your instructions, even when they stretch me, challenge me, or lead me into unfamiliar places.
Lord, remove every distraction, every stubborn place, and every fear that keeps me from surrendering fully to You. Align my heart with Your will. Align my steps with Your purpose. Align my desires with Your truth.
I believe that Your plans for me are good. I believe that Your guidance protects me. I believe that obedience positions me for Your best.
So today, I choose to trust You. I choose to follow You. I choose to obey You.
Let Your light shine within me so powerfully that it transforms me from the inside out. And may that light—Your light—become a testimony no one can dim.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
