The Fruit of the Spirit Is a Parenting Plan
You don’t need another parenting book. You need Galatians 5:22–23. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” Read it as a parenting plan and it reorganizes everything.
Because here’s the trap: we read that list as a description of what we want our kids to become. It is. But it’s first a description of what the Spirit wants to grow in you, the parent, so that your kids can see it up close.
Nine fruits, nine parenting questions
- Love: Does my child know, beyond doubt, that my love doesn’t rise and fall with their behavior?
- Joy: Is our home a place where God is associated with delight, or only with rules?
- Peace: Am I the calm in the house, or the storm?
- Patience: Do I expect a 6-year-old to act like a 16-year-old?
- Kindness: Would my child describe my tone as kind, even when I’m correcting them?
- Goodness: Do they see me do right when no one’s watching?
- Faithfulness: Do I keep my promises to them, even small ones?
- Gentleness: When they fail, is my first move toward them or against them?
- Self-control: Do I discipline my child or discharge my anger on them?
The order is not an accident
Self-control is last, and it’s the one most of us need first. The parent who can’t control their own temper has no credibility teaching a child to control theirs. Kids learn self-control by watching someone practice it under pressure. That someone is you.
It’s fruit, not a checklist
Fruit grows. It isn’t manufactured. Jesus said, “Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). So the plan isn’t “try harder to be patient.” The plan is stay connected to the Vine, and let Him grow in you what you cannot produce on your own. Your kids are watching the process, and the process is the lesson.
Try this week
Pick the one fruit you’re weakest in as a parent. Tell your kids you’re asking God to grow it in you. Yes, out loud. A parent who admits they’re still growing gives their child permission to still be growing too.
