Letting Go When It Still Hurts: A Devotional on Forgiveness

Forgiveness sounds beautiful until you actually have to do it. It’s easy to forgive small things — a forgotten text, a misunderstanding, a minor offense. But what about the deeper wounds?

The betrayal. The abandonment. The disrespect. The broken trust.

Those wounds don’t heal overnight.

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” — Ephesians 4:32

Forgiveness isn’t pretending it didn’t hurt. Forgiveness is choosing not to let the hurt control you anymore.

1. Forgiveness Is a Process, Not a Moment

In real life, forgiveness looks like:

  • Feeling angry again and choosing not to retaliate

  • Remembering what happened and choosing not to reopen the wound

  • Seeing the person and choosing not to rehearse the offense

  • Praying for healing even when emotions don’t match

Forgiveness is a journey — and God walks it with you.

2. Forgiveness Doesn’t Excuse the Behavior

You can forgive someone and still:

  • Set boundaries

  • Protect your peace

  • Choose distance

  • Heal at your own pace

Forgiveness is about your freedom, not their comfort.

3. Forgiveness Opens the Door to Healing

Bitterness keeps you stuck in the moment you were hurt. Forgiveness moves you forward.

Try this today:

Say this out loud: “God, help me release what I cannot carry.”

Prayer:

Lord, help me forgive even when it’s hard. Heal my heart and free me from bitterness. Amen.

Reflection Question:

Who or what do you need to release today?
