A Biblical View of Work and Wages

Work can feel like a burden, a paycheck, or a calling. Scripture gives us a bigger picture: work is part of God's good design, and how we work, and how we're paid, matters to Him.

Work is a gift

Genesis 2:15: "And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it."

Work existed before sin. God gave Adam meaningful work in a perfect world. Sin made work harder (Genesis 3:17–19), but it didn't make work bad.

Ecclesiastes 5:19: "…to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God."

Work with diligence

2 Thessalonians 3:10: "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat."

Paul wasn't talking about people who can't work, but those who are able and choose not to. Scripture values diligence and providing for ourselves and our families.

Workers deserve fair pay

Luke 10:7: "…for the labourer is worthy of his hire."

Leviticus 19:13: "…the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning."

God cares that workers are paid fairly and promptly.

Is it okay to ask for a raise?

Yes. Seeking fair compensation isn't greed. If you've grown in skill and responsibility, it's reasonable to ask respectfully. Do your research, focus on the value you bring, and keep your attitude humble. Whatever the answer, trust God as your ultimate provider.

Work for the right audience

Colossians 3:23–24: "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance."

Even in jobs that feel unseen or underpaid, your work matters to God.

Rest is part of the design

God commanded a Sabbath rest (Exodus 20:9–10). Work is good, but it was never meant to consume us. Rest is an act of trust.

When work is hard

If you're underemployed, unemployed, or in a difficult job, your worth isn't defined by your paycheck. God sees your faithfulness and provides in ways you may not expect.

A prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of work. Help me work diligently and honestly, as unto You. Provide fair pay for my labor, and help me treat others fairly too. Teach me to rest and trust You. Amen.
