Getting Out of Debt God's Way

Debt can feel crushing: bills that keep coming, interest that keeps growing, and the constant stress of owing more than you have. If you're there, you're not alone, and you're not a failure. With God's help and a plan, freedom is possible.

What the Bible says about debt

Proverbs 22:7: "The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender."

Romans 13:8: "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another."

Scripture doesn't say all borrowing is sinful, but it does warn that debt limits freedom. It also calls us to repay honestly: "The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again" (Psalm 37:21).

Start without shame

Debt happens for many reasons: medical bills, job loss, emergencies, divorce, or past choices. Whatever brought you here, God's grace meets you. Confess where you need to, receive His forgiveness, and move forward with hope.

Practical steps

1. Stop adding new debt. As much as possible, pause new credit card charges and loans.

2. List every debt. Creditor, balance, interest rate, and minimum payment. Facing the full picture brings clarity.

3. Build a small emergency buffer. A little savings can keep you from going deeper into debt when surprises happen.

4. Make a budget. Find extra money to put toward debt.

5. Choose a payoff method:

  • Snowball: Pay off the smallest balance first for quick wins and motivation.
  • Avalanche: Pay off the highest interest rate first to save the most money.

6. Call your creditors. Ask about lower interest rates, hardship programs, or payment plans.

7. Get help. Many churches offer financial classes, and nonprofit credit counseling agencies offer free or low-cost help.

8. Avoid predatory lenders. Be cautious of payday loans and high-fee "quick cash" offers.

9. Celebrate progress. Every debt paid off is a victory.

Keep giving, even a little

Many believers keep giving something even while paying off debt. Generosity keeps your heart free from fear and reminds you who your provider is.

Trust God through the process

Getting out of debt usually takes time. Stay patient, keep praying, and trust that God is with you.

A prayer

Lord, I feel weighed down by debt. Forgive me for any unwise choices, and give me wisdom and discipline now. Provide what I need, open doors I can't see, and lead me step by step to freedom. Amen.
