How to Help the Poor Biblically
From Genesis to Revelation, God shows special concern for the poor, the widow, the orphan, and the stranger. Caring for people in need isn't optional for believers. It's part of what it means to follow Jesus.
God commands open hands
Deuteronomy 15:11: "For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land."
Jesus identifies with the poor
Matthew 25:35–36: "For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me."
When we serve people in need, we serve Jesus Himself.
Faith shows up in action
James 2:15–16: "If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?"
Generosity with dignity
In Israel, farmers were told to leave the edges of their fields and fallen grain for the poor to gather (Leviticus 19:9–10). Ruth gathered grain this way in Boaz's field. This "gleaning" provided for people while preserving their dignity and allowing them to work.
Biblical help isn't just handouts. It's love that respects people as image-bearers.
Practical ways to help
- Build relationships. Learn names and stories, not just needs.
- Give through trusted local organizations: food banks, shelters, pregnancy centers, and church benevolence ministries.
- Meet immediate needs like food, clothing, and shelter.
- Support long-term solutions: job training, education, mentoring, and childcare.
- Use your skills: tutoring, legal help, medical care, or financial coaching.
- Advocate for fair treatment of the vulnerable (Proverbs 31:8–9).
- Give wisely. Sometimes the most loving help looks like a meal, a ride, or a gift card instead of cash, or a referral to an organization equipped to help.
Education changes lives
At Claimed by God Designs, our heart for this is behind Children of the Promise, our vision to help send children to school who otherwise couldn't go. Five percent of every order goes into that fund.
A prayer
Lord, give me eyes to see people in need the way You do. Open my hands wide. Help me give generously, serve with dignity, and love the poor as I would love You. Amen.
