Integrity in Business: Doing Work God's Way
Whether you own a business, manage a team, or work for someone else, integrity matters to God. The Bible has surprisingly specific things to say about honest business practices.
Honest scales
Proverbs 11:1: "A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight."
In ancient markets, dishonest merchants rigged their scales to cheat customers. God called it an abomination. Today that might look like hidden fees, misleading ads, or cutting quality while charging the same price.
Pay workers fairly and on time
Leviticus 19:13: "…the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning."
James 5:4 warns against withholding workers' wages, saying their cries reach "the ears of the Lord."
Keep your word
Matthew 5:37: "But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay."
Honor contracts, deadlines, and promises, even when it costs you.
Make it right
When Zacchaeus met Jesus, he said, "if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold" (Luke 19:8). Integrity includes making things right when we've wronged someone.
Integrity in practice
For business owners:
- Market honestly. Don't exaggerate or mislead.
- Price fairly and be transparent about costs.
- Honor refunds, warranties, and policies.
- Treat employees with dignity and pay them well.
- Pay vendors on time.
- Own mistakes publicly and fix them.
For employees:
- Give honest effort for your pay.
- Report your hours accurately.
- Don't take what isn't yours, including supplies or time.
- Speak truthfully, even when it's uncomfortable.
Integrity is a witness
Daniel's enemies "could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful" (Daniel 6:4). An honest business or worker stands out and points people to God.
When integrity costs you
Sometimes doing the right thing means losing a sale, a deal, or a promotion. Trust that God sees, and that a clear conscience is worth more than gain.
Proverbs 10:9: "He that walketh uprightly walketh surely."
Start each workday with a reminder of who you serve, like a verse on your travel mug.
A prayer
Lord, help me work with integrity in every detail. Keep my scales honest, my word true, and my heart clean. When honesty costs me, help me trust You. Let my work honor You. Amen.
