Paying Taxes Honestly: Render Unto Caesar

Few people enjoy paying taxes. But Scripture actually addresses it, and Jesus' famous answer about taxes says a lot about where our loyalty truly lies.

Render unto Caesar

Religious leaders tried to trap Jesus with a question: Should we pay taxes to Caesar? Jesus asked for a coin and pointed to Caesar's image on it:

Matthew 22:21: "Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's."

The coin bore Caesar's image, so give it back to him. But we bear God's image, so we give ourselves to God. Paying taxes is part of life in this world. Our deepest allegiance belongs to God.

Paul's teaching

Romans 13:7: "Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour."

Paul wrote this to believers living under the Roman Empire, a government that wasn't Christian. Paying what we owe is part of living honestly.

Honesty matters

Believers are called to integrity in every area, including taxes. That means reporting income honestly, not inflating deductions, and keeping accurate records. Using every legal deduction and credit you qualify for is wise stewardship. Hiding income or cheating isn't.

Practical tips

  • Keep good records throughout the year: receipts, income statements, and charitable giving.
  • Track charitable giving for potential deductions.
  • Plan ahead if you're self-employed: set aside money for taxes from each payment.
  • File on time, or request an extension if needed.
  • Get help from a qualified tax professional or a free tax preparation program if your situation is complex.
  • Beware of tax scams. Tax agencies typically don't demand immediate payment by gift card or threaten arrest over the phone.

Using a tax refund wisely

If you get a refund, make a plan before it arrives: give, pay down debt, build savings, and then enjoy a portion.

A peaceful heart

Taxes can be frustrating, but they don't have to steal your peace. Pay what's owed, be honest, and remember that everything you have ultimately belongs to God.

Keep receipts and records organized in a journal or folder throughout the year.

This article offers general biblical principles, not tax or legal advice. Consult a qualified tax professional for your situation.

A prayer

Lord, help me be honest and faithful in every financial matter, including taxes. Give me wisdom and peace. I bear Your image, and I give myself to You. Amen.
