Side Hustles and Faith: Earning Extra Without Losing Balance

Side hustles are everywhere: selling crafts online, driving for delivery apps, freelancing, tutoring, reselling, or small businesses on the side. Extra income can help pay off debt, build savings, fund a dream, or increase generosity. But side hustles can also crowd out rest, family, and faith.

Biblical examples

The Proverbs 31 woman "considereth a field, and buyeth it" and "maketh fine linen, and selleth it" (Proverbs 31:16, 24). She was entrepreneurial and industrious.

The apostle Paul supported himself by making tents while doing ministry: "by their occupation they were tentmakers" (Acts 18:3).

Extra work isn't unspiritual. It can be wise and generous.

Questions to ask first

  • Why do I want this? To meet a need, reach a goal, or keep up with others?
  • What will it cost? Time with family, sleep, church, or rest?
  • Does my spouse agree?
  • Is it honest and ethical?
  • Have I counted the start-up costs? (Luke 14:28)
  • How long will I do it? A season with a goal is often healthier than an open-ended grind.

A word about MLMs

Multi-level marketing companies often promise big income, but many participants earn little or even lose money. Be cautious of any opportunity that requires large upfront purchases, emphasizes recruiting over selling, or pressures you to sell to friends and family. Protect your relationships and your budget. Research carefully before joining.

Guarding against hustle culture

Psalm 127:2: "It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep."

  • Set clear work hours, and keep them.
  • Protect your Sabbath.
  • Keep family dinners and bedtime routines.
  • Watch for exhaustion and irritability.
  • Remember your worth isn't in your productivity.

Use extra income with purpose

Decide ahead of time where side income will go: debt, savings, giving, or a specific goal. Without a plan, extra money can quietly disappear.

Plan your goals and hours in a journal, and let a Christian watch remind you that your time belongs to God.

A prayer

Lord, bless the work of my hands. Give me wisdom about whether and how to earn extra income. Keep me from greed and exhaustion. Help me protect my family, my rest, and my time with You. Amen.
