Starting a Faith-Based Business
Many believers dream of building a business that reflects their faith: a shop, a service, a ministry-minded company, or a creative brand. A faith-based business can be a powerful way to serve customers, provide for your family, create jobs, and point people to God. It also comes with real challenges.
Businesspeople in Scripture
Lydia was "a seller of purple" (Acts 16:14), a businesswoman who opened her home to the early church.
Priscilla and Aquila were tentmakers who worked alongside Paul and later led a church in their home (Acts 18:2–3; Romans 16:3–5).
The Proverbs 31 woman bought land, made goods, and sold them.
Start with purpose
Proverbs 16:3: "Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established."
Ask:
- Why do I want to start this business?
- Who will it serve?
- How will it honor God?
- What will success look like beyond profit?
Write a short mission statement to keep you grounded.
Count the cost
Luke 14:28: "For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost?"
- Research your market and competitors.
- Estimate start-up and ongoing costs.
- Start small and avoid heavy debt if possible.
- Understand legal and tax requirements.
- Seek counsel from experienced business owners (Proverbs 15:22).
Build on integrity
Be honest in marketing, fair in pricing, clear in policies, and quick to make things right with customers. Your reputation is a witness.
Keep God first
Businesses can easily consume time, energy, and identity. Protect your Sabbath, family time, and spiritual life. Remember your business is a calling, not your god.
Be generous
Many faith-based businesses build generosity into their model: giving a percentage of profits, supporting causes, or serving their community.
Expect hard seasons
Slow sales, setbacks, and mistakes are normal. Persevere, learn, adjust, and keep trusting God.
Proverbs 22:29: "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings."
Plan, pray, and dream in a business journal.
A prayer for entrepreneurs
Lord, I commit this business to You. Give me wisdom, integrity, and perseverance. Help me serve people well, treat others fairly, and keep You first. Let this work bring glory to Your name. Amen.
