Burnout and the Sabbath: Rest for Healthcare Workers
Back-to-back shifts. Short staffing. Picking up "just one more" because the unit needs you. Healthcare workers are some of the most giving people on earth, and that generosity can quietly turn into exhaustion. If you're running on fumes, God isn't disappointed in you. He's inviting you to rest.
Rest Was God's Idea First
In Genesis 2:2-3, God rested on the seventh day. Not because He was tired, but to set a rhythm for His people. Later He made Sabbath a command (Exodus 20:8-10), and Jesus reminded us that "the sabbath was made for man" (Mark 2:27). Rest isn't laziness. It's trust. It says, "God, the world keeps spinning without me, because You hold it."
Jesus Took Breaks, Too
Even with crowds pressing in and needs everywhere, Jesus "withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed" (Luke 5:16). He told His exhausted disciples, "Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while" (Mark 6:31). If the Son of God stepped away to recover, you're allowed to as well.
Sabbath When Your Schedule Isn't Monday to Friday
Healthcare doesn't close on Sundays. Your Sabbath may not fall on the weekend, and that's okay. The heart of Sabbath is a regular, protected time to stop, worship, and be restored. A few ideas:
- Pick your Sabbath day. Choose a regular day off and guard it like an appointment with God.
- Unplug from work. Silence the scheduling app. You don't have to answer every "Can anyone pick up?" text.
- Do what refills you. Worship, nap, walk outside, cook a slow meal, laugh with family.
- Catch a service online. If you work every Sunday morning, find a church that streams or offers another service time.
Signs You Need Rest Now
Irritability with patients, dreading every shift, feeling numb, trouble sleeping, or pulling away from people you love can all be signs that you're depleted. Bring those honestly to God, and talk with someone you trust. If exhaustion is affecting your health, it's wise to reach out to a doctor or counselor too. Asking for help is part of good stewardship.
A Prayer for Rest
Jesus, You said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." I'm coming. Teach me to stop without guilt. Restore my body and my joy. Amen.
