Prayer Request mugs for a workplace prayer group

How to Start a Prayer Group at Your Hospital or Clinic

What if your unit had a small group of people quietly praying for patients, staff, and each other every week? Many hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies already have informal prayer groups, and they can transform the spiritual atmosphere of a workplace. Here's how to start one.

Why Pray Together?

Jesus said, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20). Praying alone is powerful. Praying together builds unity, shares burdens, and reminds believers on a busy unit that they aren't alone. Acts 2:42 describes the early church devoting themselves to "fellowship" and "prayers." Your workplace can have a small version of that.

Step 1: Find One or Two Others

Start small. Notice who wears a cross, keeps a Bible in their locker, or mentions church. A simple invitation works: "I've been wanting to pray with a few coworkers before shift. Would you want to join?"

Step 2: Pick a Simple Time and Place

  • Five minutes before huddle
  • A quiet corner of the break room or the hospital chapel
  • A group text where you share requests and pray during the week
  • A short video call on days off

Consistency matters more than length.

Step 3: Keep It Respectful and Welcoming

  • Make it optional. No one should feel pressured to attend.
  • Protect patient privacy. Never share names or identifying details. "Pray for my patient in a hard situation" is enough. God knows the details.
  • Follow workplace policies. Meet during breaks or off the clock, and check whether your facility has guidelines for faith gatherings. Your chaplain may be glad to help.
  • Welcome everyone. Coworkers from different churches and backgrounds can all be part of praying for the unit.

Step 4: Pray for Specific Things

  • Patients and their families
  • Wisdom for difficult cases
  • Safety for staff
  • Coworkers going through hard times
  • Leadership and management
  • Peace and unity on the unit

Step 5: Celebrate Answered Prayers

Keep a simple note of requests and answers. Looking back over months of God's faithfulness builds faith in the whole group.

A Prayer for Your Workplace

Lord, make this workplace a place where Your presence is felt. Unite the believers here in prayer. Protect our patients and our staff, and let Your peace rest on every room. Amen.

Keep Prayer Visible

Our Prayer Request mugs are a fun conversation starter in the break room, and a great gift for each member of your new prayer group.
