How to Grow Spiritually When You're Busy

Work, kids, appointments, chores, commutes. Many believers want to grow spiritually but feel like there's no time. The idea of a peaceful hour-long quiet time sounds wonderful, and impossible. The good news? Spiritual growth doesn't require a perfect schedule. God meets you in the middle of real life.

Martha and Mary

In Luke 10, Martha was busy serving while her sister Mary sat at Jesus' feet. Jesus gently told Martha she was "careful and troubled about many things," but "one thing is needful." The point isn't that work is bad. It's that time with Jesus is essential, even in busy seasons.

Pray without ceasing

1 Thessalonians 5:17: "Pray without ceasing."

This doesn't mean being on your knees 24/7. It means living in ongoing conversation with God throughout the day.

10 realistic ways to grow when you're busy

1. Habit stack. Attach prayer to something you already do: brushing your teeth, making coffee, starting the car.

2. Pray in micro-moments. Waiting in line, at red lights, during a commercial. One-sentence prayers count.

3. Listen to Scripture. Use an audio Bible on your commute, at the gym, or while folding laundry. Wireless earbuds make it easy.

4. Read one verse a day. If a chapter feels too much, start with one verse and think about it all day.

5. Turn worry into prayer. Each time you feel stressed, pray about it right then.

6. Use your lock screen. Put a verse there. You'll see it dozens of times a day.

7. Pray with your kids. Bedtime prayers count for your spiritual life too.

8. Worship while you work. Play worship music while cooking, cleaning, or driving.

9. Protect one block of time weekly. Even 30 minutes on Sunday afternoon for deeper reflection.

10. Find a faith friend. A quick weekly text to pray for each other builds accountability.

Give yourself grace

Busy seasons are real, especially with young kids, demanding jobs, or caregiving. God isn't measuring your devotion by minutes. He welcomes the honest prayers of tired people.

Make your morning coffee your daily cue to pray with a Christian travel mug you can grab on the way out the door.

A prayer for busy people

Lord, my days are full and my time feels short. Meet me in the middle of my busy life. Help me notice You in ordinary moments and turn my thoughts to You throughout the day. Teach me the "one thing needful." Amen.
