Fighting Lies With Truth: Scripture Swaps for Common Lies

Jesus called the devil "a liar, and the father of it" (John 8:44). Most spiritual attacks don't come with dramatic signs. They come as quiet thoughts that sound like our own voice: You're worthless. God is disappointed in you. Nothing will ever change.

The answer to a lie is truth.

John 8:32: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

2 Corinthians 10:5: "Casting down imaginations… and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."

12 common lies, and the truth that answers them

How to take thoughts captive

  1. Notice the thought. Pay attention to what you're telling yourself.
  2. Name it. Is this true according to God's Word?
  3. Replace it. Speak the matching Scripture out loud.
  4. Repeat. Lies believed for years take repetition to uproot.

Keep truth within reach

Write your most-needed truth on a card, your mirror, or a bookmark you'll see daily. Our In Christ I Am Collection puts identity truth on everyday items to help drown out the lies.

A prayer

Lord, I've believed lies about myself, about You, and about my future. Help me recognize them and replace them with Your truth. Take every thought captive to Christ. Let Your truth set me free. Amen.
