Strongholds: What They Are and How to Tear Them Down
2 Corinthians 10:3–5: "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."
A stronghold was a fortress: a heavily defended place that was hard to conquer. Paul uses the word to describe patterns of thinking that have become fortified in our minds, places where lies, fear, or sin have dug in and resist change.
What strongholds look like
Strongholds often feel like "just the way I am." They're beliefs and habits so familiar they seem normal. Common ones include:
- Fear: "Something bad is always about to happen."
- Shame: "I'm too damaged for God to use."
- Unforgiveness: "I'll never let them off the hook."
- Rejection: "Everyone eventually leaves."
- Pride: "I don't need anyone's help."
- Addiction: "I can't cope without this."
- Anger: "I have to fight to protect myself."
Our weapons are different
You can't tear down a spiritual stronghold with willpower alone. Paul says our weapons are "mighty through God": truth, prayer, God's Word, worship, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
How strongholds come down
1. Identify it. Ask God to show you where a lie has taken root. Notice repeated thoughts and reactions.
2. Trace it. When did this belief start? Often strongholds form around wounds, trauma, or repeated sin.
3. Confess and renounce it. Agree with God about what's false or sinful, and turn from it.
4. Replace it with truth. Find the Scripture that answers the lie, and speak it daily.
5. Take thoughts captive. When the old thought returns, stop it and redirect it to Christ.
6. Invite others in. Strongholds lose power in the light. Confess to a trusted believer (James 5:16).
7. Be patient. Fortresses built over years may come down brick by brick.
When you need more help
Some strongholds, especially addiction, trauma, and deep depression, need professional help alongside spiritual support. Counselors, recovery groups like Celebrate Recovery, and doctors are tools God can use. Seeking help is an act of faith, not a lack of it.
Victory is possible
No stronghold is too strong for God. Write down the lie and the truth in a journal and watch God work over time. And when the enemy tries to rebuild, our Not Today Satan Collection is a bold reminder of who wins.
A prayer
Lord, show me the strongholds in my mind. Tear down every lie that exalts itself against the knowledge of You. Help me take every thought captive and replace it with Your truth. Set me free, brick by brick. Amen.
