The Armor of God Explained (Ephesians 6)

Ephesians 6:10–11: "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil."

Paul wrote these words while chained to a Roman soldier. He looked at that soldier's armor and saw a picture of how God equips believers for spiritual battle. Let's walk through it piece by piece.

The real battle

Ephesians 6:12: "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

Our true enemy isn't the coworker, the ex, or the neighbor. People aren't the enemy. The battle is spiritual.

1. The belt of truth

"Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth." A Roman soldier's belt held everything else in place. Truth, both God's Word and honest living, holds the Christian life together. The devil is a liar; truth is your foundation.

2. The breastplate of righteousness

"And having on the breastplate of righteousness." The breastplate protected the heart. Your righteousness comes from Christ, not your performance, and it guards your heart from the enemy's accusations. Living rightly also closes doors the enemy would use.

3. Shoes of the gospel of peace

"And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace." Soldiers needed sturdy footing. The gospel gives you stable ground and readiness to share peace with others.

4. The shield of faith

"Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." Roman shields could be soaked in water to put out flaming arrows. Faith, trusting God's character and promises, extinguishes the enemy's attacks of doubt, fear, and temptation.

5. The helmet of salvation

"And take the helmet of salvation." The helmet protects the mind. Knowing you are saved and secure in Christ guards your thoughts against despair and fear.

6. The sword of the Spirit

"And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." This is the only offensive weapon. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He answered each temptation with Scripture (Matthew 4). Knowing God's Word lets you fight back with truth.

7. Prayer

"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit." Prayer isn't a piece of armor, but it's how a soldier stays connected to headquarters. Prayer powers everything else.

Putting it on daily

Try praying through the armor each morning:

Lord, I put on the belt of truth. Guard my heart with the righteousness of Christ. Ready my feet with Your gospel of peace. I take up the shield of faith against every lie. I put on the helmet of salvation; my mind is secure in You. I take up the sword of the Spirit, Your Word. And I stay in prayer with You all day. Amen.
