Why You Can't Fight Spiritual Battles Alone

When life gets hard, many of us instinctively pull away. We skip church, stop answering texts, and try to handle things on our own. But isolation is exactly where the enemy wants us. God designed believers to fight together.

The lion and the isolated

1 Peter 5:8: "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."

Predators often target the animal that has wandered away from the herd. Spiritually, it's no different. Isolation makes us more vulnerable to discouragement, temptation, and lies.

Two are better than one

Ecclesiastes 4:9–10, 12: "Two are better than one… For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up… and a threefold cord is not quickly broken."

Iron sharpens iron

Proverbs 27:17: "Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."

Godly friends help us see our blind spots, encourage us to keep going, and remind us of the truth.

Arms held up

When Moses grew too tired to hold up his arms during battle, Aaron and Hur held them up, and Israel won (Exodus 17:12). Sometimes your victory depends on others holding you up.

Don't stop gathering

Hebrews 10:24–25: "And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another."

James 5:16: "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed."

If church has hurt you

Some people pull away from community because of real church hurt. That pain matters. Healing may take time, and it's wise to look for a healthy, humble, accountable community. But don't let one painful experience keep you isolated forever.

Building your circle

  • Find a church family and attend consistently.
  • Join a small group where people actually know you.
  • Identify two or three trusted friends you can call in a crisis.
  • Be honest about what you're facing.
  • Pray for each other regularly.
  • Show up for others too. Community goes both ways.

Bring your Bible to church in a Christian tote bag, and encourage a friend with something from our Christian gift ideas.

A prayer

Lord, I've tried to fight alone, and I'm tired. Lead me to people who will stand with me, pray for me, and hold up my arms. Help me be that kind of friend for others too. Keep me from isolation. Amen.
