Bible Verses About Love: What God's Word Says About Real Love

The world uses the word "love" for everything from tacos to soulmates. The Bible uses it too, but it means something deeper, steadier, and far more costly. If you want to understand real love, the kind that doesn't quit when feelings fade, God's Word is the best place to start.

Here are Bible verses about love, organized by where love starts, what it looks like, and how to live it.

God's love for you

  • Jeremiah 31:3: "Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee."
  • Romans 5:8: "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
  • Zephaniah 3:17: "The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing."
  • Romans 8:38–39: "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
  • 1 John 4:8: "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love."

Romans 5:8 is the heart of it. God didn't wait for you to get your life together before He loved you. He loved you at your worst, and proved it at the cross. Zephaniah goes even further: God doesn't just tolerate you. He sings over you.

What real love looks like

1 Corinthians 13:4–7: "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things."

In the King James Version, "charity" is the word for love: not a warm feeling, but a choice to seek someone else's good. Try this: read the passage again and replace "charity" with "Jesus." It fits perfectly. Then replace it with your own name. That's where the growing happens.

  • John 15:13: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
  • 1 John 4:18: "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear."
  • Song of Solomon 8:7: "Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it."

How to love others

  • Mark 12:30–31: "And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."
  • John 13:34: "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another."
  • 1 Peter 4:8: "And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins."
  • Colossians 3:14: "And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness."

Jesus' "new" commandment raised the bar. It's not just "love your neighbor as yourself," but love one another "as I have loved you." That means patiently, sacrificially, and first.

Love in marriage and close relationships

  • Ruth 1:16: "Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God."
  • 1 John 4:19: "We love him, because he first loved us."

Ruth's words are often read at weddings, but she first spoke them to her mother-in-law. Covenant love isn't only romantic. It's loyal, it stays, and it shows up in friendships and families too.

Ways to share God's love this week

Say it out loud. Tell someone specifically why you love them, and that God does too.

Love with a small gift. A thoughtful present that carries a message can speak love on days you can't be there. Our Christian gift ideas are made for exactly that, and our Christian Valentine's Day gifts keep God at the center of romance.

Love the hard-to-love. Pray for one difficult person by name every day this week. It's hard to stay bitter toward someone you're praying for.

A prayer to love well

Father, thank You for loving me with an everlasting love, before I ever loved You. Teach me to love like You do: patiently, kindly, and without keeping score. When love costs me something, remind me what it cost You. Let the people in my life feel Your love through me. In Jesus' name, amen.
