Building Faith-Filled Family Traditions as a Christian Couple

Traditions give a family its rhythm and identity. When those traditions point to God, they become powerful tools for passing faith from one generation to the next. Whether you're newlyweds or parents of teens, it's never too late to start.

God loves traditions that remember

After Israel crossed the Jordan, God told them to set up twelve stones as a memorial so that when their children asked, "What mean ye by these stones?" they could tell the story of God's faithfulness (Joshua 4:6–7).

Deuteronomy 6:6–7: "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."

Weekly traditions

  • A special Sunday breakfast or lunch after church
  • Family game night with a short devotional
  • A weekly "blessing" where parents pray over each child

Yearly traditions

  • Anniversary reflection. Each year, write down how God was faithful that year.
  • Advent readings leading up to Christmas.
  • Matching Christmas pajamas for the family photo. Our women's and men's Christian pajamas are favorites.
  • Easter sunrise service or walk.
  • Thanksgiving gratitude tablecloth. Everyone writes what they're thankful for each year.

Memorial stones of your own

Keep a jar of stones or a journal of answered prayers. Each time God answers, add one and write the story. Over the years, it becomes a family testimony.

Tips for starting

Start small. One or two traditions are better than ten you can't keep.

Blend your backgrounds. Bring the best of both your families' traditions.

Keep the focus on Jesus. Traditions are tools, not the goal.

A prayer for our family

Lord, let our home be a place where Your faithfulness is remembered and celebrated. Help us build traditions that point our family to You for generations. Amen.
