Couples Bible Study Plan: Where to Start

You want to study the Bible together, but where do you start? Genesis? Revelation? A devotional? Here's a simple, beginner-friendly plan for couples who want to grow in God's Word side by side.

Why study together?

Psalm 119:105: "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

When you walk the same path with the same light, you grow in the same direction. Couples who study Scripture together build a shared language of faith.

A simple method: Read, Notice, Apply, Pray

Read a short passage aloud, 10 to 20 verses.

Notice: What stands out? What does it teach about God?

Apply: What does this mean for us and our marriage this week?

Pray the passage back to God together.

A 4-week starter plan

Week 1 – The Gospel of Mark. Short, fast-paced, and focused on Jesus. Read one chapter a day.

Week 2 – Ephesians. Six chapters on identity in Christ, unity, and marriage (chapter 5).

Week 3 – Psalms. One psalm a day. Try Psalms 1, 23, 27, 46, 91, 103, and 139.

Week 4 – Proverbs. Read the chapter that matches the date. Talk about one wise saying each day.

Tips for success

  • Keep it short. 15 minutes is plenty.
  • Pick a set time. After dinner, before bed, or with morning coffee.
  • Don't compete. One of you may know more. That's okay. Learn together.
  • Write it down. A shared journal helps you remember what God taught you.
  • Give grace when you miss days.

Make it cozy

Create a spot you both look forward to. Two matching couple mugs, a blanket, and your Bibles are all you need.

A prayer before studying

Lord, open our eyes to see wonderful things in Your Word. Teach us together, grow us together, and make us doers of the Word and not hearers only. Amen.
