How to Keep Christ at the Center of a Busy Marriage
Most couples don't drift from God on purpose. They just get busy. Work deadlines, school runs, ministry commitments, bills, and endless notifications slowly crowd Him to the edges. Here's how to keep Christ at the center even when life is full.
Who's building your house?
Psalm 127:1: "Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it."
You can work hard on your marriage and still feel like you're spinning your wheels if God isn't the one building it.
The Martha trap
In Luke 10, Martha was busy serving Jesus while Mary sat at His feet. Jesus gently told Martha she was "careful and troubled about many things" but that "one thing is needful" (Luke 10:41–42). Busy couples can miss Jesus while serving Him.
7 practical ways to keep Christ central
1. Anchor your day. Pray together for two minutes before you leave in the morning.
2. Use transition times. Listen to a sermon or worship music on the commute.
3. Guard Sunday. Make church and rest non-negotiable.
4. Hold a weekly check-in. Review calendars together and ask, "Is anything crowding out God or each other?"
5. Say no. Every yes costs something. It's okay to decline good things to protect what matters most.
6. Pray at meals, even quick ones, even in the car.
7. Keep visible reminders. Scripture on the fridge, a verse on your mug, faith on your clothes. Our Ecclesiastes 4:12 couple mugs are an easy way to start.
Seek first
Matthew 6:33: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
When God comes first, everything else finds its proper place, including your marriage.
A prayer for busy couples
Lord, we're tired and stretched. Forgive us for crowding You out. Be the builder of our home. Help us choose the one thing that is needful, and give us rest in You. Amen.
