In Sickness and in Health: Supporting Your Spouse Through Hard Seasons
"In sickness and in health. For richer, for poorer." We say those vows easily on our wedding day. Living them is harder. Illness, job loss, depression, or a crisis of faith can turn one spouse into the caregiver and the other into the one who needs care. Here's how to support your spouse well.
Carrying burdens together
Galatians 6:2: "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ."
Ecclesiastes 4:10: "For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow."
How to support your spouse
1. Listen more than you fix. Often your spouse needs to feel heard before they need solutions.
2. Ask, "What would help most today?" Needs change daily. Let them tell you.
3. Don't rush them. Healing takes time. Avoid "You should be over this by now."
4. Encourage, don't preach. Share a verse gently, but avoid making them feel their struggle is a faith failure.
5. Help them get care. Make appointments, drive them, or sit with them. If your spouse is struggling with their mental health, encourage them to see a doctor or counselor. Getting help is wise, not weak.
6. Pray for and with them. When they can't find the words, pray on their behalf.
Take care of yourself too
Caregivers burn out. You can't pour from an empty cup. Get rest, accept help from friends and church, and find someone to talk to. Read our encouragement for when you're running on empty.
If your spouse is in crisis
If your spouse talks about wanting to die or harm themselves, take it seriously. In the U.S., call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 in an emergency.
God's promise in hard seasons
Isaiah 43:2: "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee."
A prayer for hard seasons
Lord, my spouse is hurting. Show me how to love them well. Give me patience, wisdom, and strength. Be near to both of us, and carry us through these waters. Amen.
