Marriage Devotional: When You Feel Distant From Your Spouse
A marriage devotional for seasons of distance.
Maybe there wasn't a big fight. Maybe it just happened slowly: busy schedules, kids, work, screens. Now you share a home but not much else. If you feel distant from your spouse, you're not alone, and it doesn't have to stay this way.
Today's Scripture
Revelation 2:4–5: "Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works."
Jesus spoke these words to a church that was busy doing good things but had drifted from its love for Him. His remedy is simple, and it applies beautifully to marriage too.
Three steps back to closeness
Remember. Think back to the early days. What did you love about your spouse? What did you do together? Make a list, and consider sharing it with them.
Repent. Distance usually has two contributors. Ask God to show you where you've withdrawn, prioritized other things, or let resentment build. Own your part.
Return to the first works. Do what you did at the beginning. Hold hands. Leave a note. Ask about their day and really listen. Plan a date. Feelings often follow actions.
God is near in the lonely places
Psalm 34:18: "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."
If your heart aches over the distance, bring that ache to God. He sees it, and He can rebuild what feels lost.
Reflect
- When did I first notice the distance?
- What "first work" can I do this week?
- What do I need to confess to God, or to my spouse?
Today's prayer
Lord, we have drifted. Remind us of the love we started with, and more importantly, of Your love that never drifts. Show me my part, soften both our hearts, and draw us back to each other and to You. Amen.
If the distance has grown into something deeper, please consider reaching out to a pastor or Christian counselor. Asking for help is a sign of strength.
