Marriage Through Seasons of Grief and Loss

The loss of a parent, a child, a pregnancy, a job, or a dream can shake a marriage to its core. Grief can pull couples together, but it can also push them apart, especially when each person grieves differently.

God is close to the grieving

Psalm 34:18: "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart."

2 Corinthians 1:3–4 calls God "the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation."

Even Jesus wept at His friend's tomb (John 11:35). Grief isn't a lack of faith. It's love with nowhere to go.

You may grieve differently

One spouse may want to talk; the other may go quiet. One may cry often; the other may stay busy. One may want to visit the grave; the other may avoid it. Different doesn't mean wrong, and it doesn't mean your spouse cares less.

How to walk through grief together

1. Give each other grace. Don't judge how your spouse grieves.

2. Say what you need. "I just need you to sit with me" or "I need some time alone today."

3. Keep turning toward each other. Hold hands. Sit close. Small connection matters.

4. Pray honestly. Lament is biblical. Read a psalm of lament together, like Psalm 13.

5. Accept help. Let your church bring meals and pray for you.

6. Remember hard dates together. Anniversaries and holidays can be painful. Plan ahead for how you'll mark them.

7. Get support. A grief support group or Christian counselor can help when grief feels stuck.

Hope beyond loss

Revelation 21:4: "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying."

Grief is real, but so is hope. Hold on to each other, and hold on to Him.

A prayer for grieving couples

God of all comfort, our hearts are broken. Hold us close to You and to each other. Give us grace for how differently we hurt. Carry us through this season, and remind us that this is not the end of the story. Amen.
