Rekindling Romance in a Long Marriage: Lessons From Song of Solomon
Remember the butterflies? The long talks, the nervous excitement, the way you couldn't stop smiling? Years of bills, kids, and routine can make romance feel like a distant memory. But God designed marriage to be delightful, and romance can be rekindled.
God celebrates romance
An entire book of the Bible, the Song of Solomon, celebrates love, desire, and delight between a husband and wife.
Song of Solomon 2:16: "My beloved is mine, and I am his."
Song of Solomon 8:7: "Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it."
Proverbs 5:18: "Rejoice with the wife of thy youth."
Romance isn't worldly. It's a gift from God.
What the Song of Solomon teaches
Admire each other out loud. The couple in the Song constantly praises each other. Compliment your spouse's character and appearance.
Pursue each other. They seek each other out. Don't wait to be pursued. Initiate.
Make time to get away. "Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field" (Song of Solomon 7:11). Plan time alone together.
Protect your love. "Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines" (2:15). Deal with small irritations before they damage your relationship.
Simple ways to rekindle romance
- Leave a love note somewhere unexpected
- Recreate your first date
- Slow dance in the kitchen
- Send a flirty text in the middle of the day
- Plan a surprise night away
- Give a thoughtful gift from our Christian Valentine's collection just because
- Hold hands in public again
Start with your heart
Romance often fades when resentment grows. If there's unresolved hurt, start there. Forgiveness opens the door for affection to return.
A prayer for romance
Lord, You created love and delight. Rekindle the spark in our marriage. Help us pursue, admire, and enjoy each other the way You intended. Amen.
