Setting Boundaries With In-Laws as a Christian Couple

In-laws can be one of the greatest blessings in a marriage, or one of the biggest sources of tension. The Bible gives a clear framework: honor your parents, but put your marriage first.

Two commands that work together

Exodus 20:12: "Honour thy father and thy mother."

Genesis 2:24: "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."

Honoring parents never ends. But in marriage, the primary loyalty shifts. You leave one household and form a new one.

Signs you may need boundaries

  • A parent expects to weigh in on every decision
  • Private marriage issues are shared with family
  • One spouse feels criticized or excluded by the other's family
  • Holiday plans cause the same fight every year
  • Financial help comes with strings attached

How to set boundaries biblically

1. Get united first. Talk privately and agree on what's okay and what isn't. Never let a parent divide you.

2. Each spouse handles their own family. It usually goes better when you speak to your own parents rather than your spouse doing it.

3. Be kind and clear. "We love you and want you in our lives. We've decided to handle this ourselves."

4. Keep private things private. Don't vent to parents about your spouse. They may forgive you long before they forgive your spouse.

5. Plan holidays ahead. Decide together and communicate early.

6. Honor where you can. Call, visit, include them, ask for wisdom when appropriate. Boundaries aren't walls.

When it's really hard

Some family situations involve control, manipulation, or harm. In those cases, firmer boundaries may be needed, and a pastor or Christian counselor can help. Romans 12:18 reminds us: "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men." Do your part, and trust God with the rest.

A prayer for in-law relationships

Lord, thank You for our families. Help us honor our parents while protecting our marriage. Give us wisdom, kind words, and unity. Bring peace where there is tension. Amen.
