A Devotional for Workers Who Feel Overlooked

Hebrews 6:10: "For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name."

Someone else got the credit. Your boss didn't notice the extra hours. The promotion went to someone else. You do the unseen work that keeps everything running, and no one says thank you. It's discouraging to work hard and feel invisible.

Joseph, forgotten

Joseph had every reason to feel overlooked. Sold by his brothers, falsely accused, and thrown in prison, he still did excellent work everywhere he went.

Genesis 39:23: "Because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper."

In prison, he helped Pharaoh's butler by interpreting his dream and asked one favor: remember me. The butler was restored to his position, and then:

Genesis 40:23: "Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him."

Two more years passed. But God hadn't forgotten. At just the right moment, Joseph was brought before Pharaoh and placed second in command of Egypt.

God sees the secret work

Matthew 6:4: "Thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly."

Colossians 3:23: "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men."

People may forget. God doesn't. Every task done with integrity, every extra mile, every unseen act of faithfulness is recorded by the One who sees in secret.

Working for an audience of One

  • Change your boss. Before work, pray: "Lord, I'm working for You today."
  • Keep your excellence. Don't let lack of recognition lower your standard.
  • Advocate wisely. It's okay to share your accomplishments or ask for fair treatment.
  • Bring a reminder. A Christian travel mug or something from our men's and women's Christian apparel can remind you whose you are on the hard days.

Reflect

  • Where do you feel most overlooked at work?
  • What would change if you truly believed God sees and will reward that work?

Pray

Lord, You see the work no one else notices. When I feel forgotten, remind me of Joseph and the God who never forgot him. Help me work with excellence for You, not for applause. Make what I do prosper, and promote me in Your time. Amen.
