A Devotional on Being Salt and Light
Matthew 5:13–16: "Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?… Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
Jesus didn't say, "Try to become salt and light." He said, "Ye are." If you follow Him, it's already your identity. The question is whether you'll live like it.
What salt does
In Jesus' day, salt was precious. It did at least three things:
- Preserved. Without refrigeration, salt kept food from spoiling. Christians help slow the decay around them through integrity, honesty, and goodness.
- Flavored. Salt makes things better. Your presence should make your home, workplace, and friendships better.
- Made people thirsty. Salt creates thirst. A life marked by peace, joy, and love makes people curious about the source.
Colossians 4:6: "Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt."
What light does
Light doesn't argue with darkness. It just shows up, and darkness has to leave. You don't have to be loud or pushy to be a light. You just have to stop hiding it under a basket.
And notice the goal: "that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father." The point isn't attention for us. It's pointing people to God.
Salt and light this week
- At home: Be the one who apologizes first and speaks with grace.
- At work: Be honest when cutting corners would be easier.
- Online: Post and comment in a way that adds light instead of heat.
- In public: Let your faith be visible. Something as simple as one of our Christian t-shirts or a piece from The Child of God Collection can open doors to conversations you'd never start on your own.
Reflect
- Where have you been hiding your light "under a bushel"?
- What's one place you could be salt this week, making it better by your presence?
Pray
Jesus, You said I am the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Help me live like it. Season my words with grace, make my presence a blessing, and let my light shine so others see You. I don't want to hide what You've done in me. Use me to point people to the Father. Amen.
