A Devotional on Praise Before the Breakthrough

Acts 16:25–26: "And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed."

Paul and Silas had been beaten and thrown into the innermost cell of a prison with their feet locked in stocks. It was midnight, the darkest hour. And they were singing.

Not after the doors opened. Before.

Praise in the dark

It's easy to praise God after the breakthrough. It takes faith to praise Him before you see anything change. Paul and Silas weren't singing because their situation was good. They were singing because God was good, and that didn't change at midnight.

And notice: "the prisoners heard them." Your praise in the dark isn't only for you. Someone is watching how you worship when life hurts.

The choir in front of the army

When three armies came against King Jehoshaphat, he did something unusual. He put singers at the front of his army:

2 Chronicles 20:21–22: "He appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir."

"When they began to sing." God moved while they were praising.

Praise is a weapon

Praise shifts your focus from the size of your problem to the size of your God. It reminds your soul of the truth when your feelings are lying. And it invites God's presence into your situation.

Psalm 34:1: "I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth."

Praise before your breakthrough

  • Make a "midnight playlist." Worship songs for your hardest moments.
  • Praise specific attributes. "You are faithful. You are healer. You are provider."
  • Thank Him in advance. "Thank You for what You're already doing that I can't see yet."
  • Wear your testimony. Our Never Failed Me Yet Collection and Christian hoodies are made for believers who praise God based on His track record.

Reflect

  • What "midnight" are you in right now?
  • What can you praise God for, even before your situation changes?

Pray

Lord, it's midnight in my situation, but You're still good. I choose to praise You before I see the breakthrough. Your mercy endures forever. You've never failed me yet. Shake the foundations of whatever is holding me captive, and let others see Your faithfulness through my praise. Amen.
