When You Feel Unseen: A Devotional on the God Who Sees

Genesis 16:13: "And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?"

Hagar had every reason to feel invisible. She was a servant with no say in her own life. She was used to solve someone else's problem, then mistreated when it worked. Finally, she ran away into the wilderness, pregnant and alone, with nowhere to go.

And that's exactly where God found her.

Genesis 16:7 says "the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness." Not in the tent with the important people. Not after she'd fixed everything. In the desert, at her lowest point, running away.

God called her by name. He asked about her story. He gave her a promise for her future. And Hagar, a servant woman most people overlooked, became the first person in the Bible to give God a name: El Roi, "the God who sees me."

You are not invisible to Him

Maybe you feel unseen in your marriage, overlooked at work, forgotten by friends, or lost in the background of everyone else's needs. Maybe you're the one who notices everyone else, and no one notices you.

Here's the truth Hagar discovered: you can be invisible to people and fully seen by God. He knows where you are right now. He knows what led you here. He sees the tears no one else sees and the effort no one thanks you for.

Psalm 139:1–2: "O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off."

Being seen by God doesn't always mean your circumstances change overnight. God actually sent Hagar back. But she went back different, because she knew she wasn't alone and her story mattered to Someone.

Reflect

  • Where in your life do you feel most unseen right now?
  • What would change if you truly believed God sees you there?
  • Who around you might be feeling unseen, and how could you notice them this week?

Pray

El Roi, You are the God who sees me. When I feel invisible, overlooked, or forgotten, remind me that You've never lost sight of me. You know where I am and how I got here. Meet me in my wilderness the way You met Hagar. Speak my name, and give me hope for what's ahead. And help me see others the way You see me. Amen.
