How to Make a Christian Budget (Simple Steps)
The word "budget" makes some people feel restricted. But a budget is really just a plan: a way to tell your money where to go instead of wondering where it went. For believers, it's also an act of stewardship, managing well what God has entrusted to us.
Count the cost
Luke 14:28: "For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?"
Proverbs 27:23: "Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds."
Knowing where your money is going is biblical wisdom.
7 simple steps
1. Pray first. Ask God for wisdom and contentment.
2. List your income. Write down what comes in each month after taxes. If income varies, use a conservative average.
3. Give first. Decide what you'll give to your church and to others, and put it at the top. "Honour the LORD with thy substance" (Proverbs 3:9).
4. Cover the essentials. Housing, utilities, food, transportation, insurance, and medical needs.
5. Pay debts. Minimum payments first, then extra on one debt at a time.
6. Save. Start an emergency fund, even a small one. Then save for future needs.
7. Plan the rest. Clothing, gifts, eating out, and fun. Yes, fun belongs in a budget!
Methods that work
- Zero-based budget: Give every dollar a job until income minus expenses equals zero.
- Envelope system: Use cash envelopes for categories like groceries and gas.
- Apps or spreadsheets: Track spending automatically.
Choose whatever you'll actually use.
Tips for success
- Track for a month first to see where money really goes.
- Be realistic. An impossible budget won't last.
- Review monthly. Adjust as life changes.
- Plan for irregular expenses like car repairs and birthdays.
- Give yourself grace. The first few months are a learning process.
Proverbs 21:5: "The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want."
Write your budget in a journal and pray over it each month. A Christian wallet can remind you to pause before spending.
