Making Big Purchases Wisely: Cars, Homes, and More
A new car. A first home. A major repair. Big purchases can bring excitement, and stress. A wise decision can bless your family for years. A rushed one can lead to regret and debt. Scripture offers wisdom for big financial decisions.
Count the cost
Luke 14:28: "For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?"
Don't rush
Proverbs 19:2: "Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth."
Salespeople often create urgency. Wise buyers slow down.
Seek counsel
Proverbs 15:22: "Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established."
Steps for wise big purchases
1. Pray. Ask God for wisdom and peace.
2. Separate need from want. Is this necessary now, or could it wait?
3. Research thoroughly. Compare options, prices, reviews, and long-term reliability.
4. Know the total cost. For a car: insurance, gas, maintenance, and registration. For a home: taxes, insurance, repairs, and utilities.
5. Set a firm budget before shopping, and stick to it.
6. Avoid overstretching. Leave room for giving, saving, and emergencies. A payment you can barely afford can steal your peace.
7. Consider saving and paying cash when possible, especially for cars.
8. Read every contract carefully before signing.
9. Wait before deciding. Sleep on it. A good deal will usually still be good tomorrow.
10. Talk with your spouse and agree together.
Check your heart
- Am I buying this to meet a need or to impress others?
- Will this help or hinder my generosity?
- Do I have peace about it?
