A Nurse's Prayer Before Every Shift
The badge goes on. The stethoscope goes around your neck. The report starts, and before you know it, twelve hours have passed. In the rush of a healthcare shift, the most important minute of the day is often the one we skip: the minute we spend with God before we begin.
Why Pray Before Your Shift?
Prayer doesn't add more work to a full day. It changes how you carry the work. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to "trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." A short prayer in the parking lot or the break room is a way of acknowledging Him before the first call light goes off.
A Prayer Before Every Shift
Father, thank You for bringing me here today. Before I see a single patient, I give this shift to You.
Give me clear thinking and steady hands. Help me catch what needs catching and never miss what matters. Protect my patients from harm, and protect me and my coworkers too.
Fill me with patience for the hard conversations and compassion for the people who are scared, angry, or alone. Let me see each person as Your child, made in Your image.
When I'm tired, be my strength. When I don't know what to say, give me words. When I make a mistake, give me humility and grace to make it right.
And when this shift ends, help me leave it in Your hands so I can rest. In Jesus' name, amen.
Make It a Habit
- Tie it to a routine. Pray as you clip on your badge or lock your car.
- Keep a verse close. Write one on an index card in your pocket. Isaiah 41:10 is a good one for heavy days.
- Pray for your assignment. Once you get report, pray for each patient by name in your heart.
- Invite a coworker. You might be surprised how many people would love to pray with you before huddle.
